Commuting on foot these days, I’ve discovered a unique view of modern history here in Arlington. These historical marker signs are out of the ordinary, yet relevant to the  importance of what happened here.

The birth of the Internet was not in Al Gore’s den; it was right here at a defense contractor’s lab, way back in the ’60s, when Arpanet came forth. The first generation of our Internet.

Watergate’s cloak and dagger shenanigans included a meeting shrouded in secrecy in a parking garage, between Woodward, Bernstein, and their source, Deep Throat. A similar sign marks that spot.

I’m enjoying the pace of life on foot here in the Rosslyn area of Arlington, where the place just hums with hard work and ambition. It’s fitting that the city lays claim to these modern history events.
